Now for what you came for!
1. Find the image you want to use and paste it onto a background with the colour you want to blend it into.
2. Go to New > Layer and make a new layer.
3. On this new layer, select your gradient tool
and pick two colours, one light and one dark of the same colour (example: light brown, dark brown).
4. Now change the settings of the gradient layer to "Lighten".
