Now for what you came for!
2. I'll be creating an X pattern so take out your pencil tool and make sure it's a 1 pixel circle; draw 2 lines going from one cornor to the one across from it.
3. Now, Saving it, click edit >>> Define Pattern and a pop-up should show up, name it whatever you want I'm naming mine "X".
